This unique bus and walking architecture tour allows you to explore the obscure district of EUR. Originally chosen in the 1930's as the site for the 1942 World Fair, Mussolini's building project in Esposizione Universale Roma (EUR) included an architecture style that was truly the first of its kind."Rational Architecture" was defined by its modern, exaggerated and authoritarian structures, using the same type of stone as the Colosseum.

Unfortunately, the onset of WWII prevented the World Fair from actually happening, but you can still see the architecture, now a symbol of this Fascist period of Italy. An undiscovered neighborhood with buildings so unique, they stand out from the rest of Rome.

Highlights

Foro Italico

The first stop on this Rome architecture tour by bus is Foro Italico (formerly Foro Mussolini) a massive sports complex located just north of the city center. Built between 1928 and 1939 and inspired by the Roman forums of the Imperial Era, it is here that you can find the Obelisk for Mussolini, Stadio dei Marmi (Stadium of the Marbles).

This unique bus and walking architecture tour allows you to explore the Mussolini- conceived EUR district of Rome. Originally chosen in the 1930's as the site for the 1942 World Fair, the architecture erected in EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma) was truly the first of its kind. "Rationalist Architecture" was defined by its modern, exaggerated and authoritarian structures. Most of which used the same type of stone that was used for the Colosseum.

Examine famous buildings and urban spaces such as the Bassorilievo Palazzo Uffici (the first building to be completed in this new district in 1939), Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (the Square Colosseum) synonymous with EUR and this period in general, and Via Cristoforo Colombo, the street that links Ostia to the historic center. Structures that are so unique, they stand out from the rest of Rome.

Piazza Venezia

Now back to Rome city center, you will pass by Piazza Venezia (Altare della Patria) and Vittorio Emanuele II Monument - the central hub of the Eternal City. You will then pass by Palazzo Venezia, the balcony made famous for many of Mussolini’s speeches during WWII.
Via dei Fori Imperiali

Walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali, the road that runs from Piazza Venezia straight to the Colosseum. Wander amongst the ruins of the Ancient Roman Forum as you make your way towards the most recognizable monument in all of Italy, and perhaps the world.
