The tour leaves Rome and heads south along the the Autostrada del Sole. Halfway to Naples, the Abbey of Montecassino, completely rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II, can be seen high up on the hill. We then pass through the countryside around Naples on our way to Pompeii. We stop for a visit at an old factory which makes cameos and coralwork in Torre del Greco. We then proceed to Pompeii and lunch in a restaurant near the ruins.
After the lunch a guided tour of Pompeii. Pompeii was buried nineteen centuries ago when Mount Vesuvius erupted in the summer of A.D. 79. The ashes, gases, and molten rock claimed many lives, though also served to preserve the debris, offering a view of the typical Roman city at the height of the Empire. Found in the ashes were people and everyday items, food and domestic animals, all hidden until the first half of the eighteenth century, when regular digs were organized.
After the visit, we continue to Rome with arrive at hotels or nearest point at about 8.30pm.
